Earthquake in Uttarakhand : On a fateful Tuesday afternoon, Delhi found itself in the throes of powerful tremors, all sparked by a series of seismic events originating in Nepal. Within a remarkably brief window of 25 minutes, two significant earthquakes measuring 4.6 and 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted the region. In swift succession, a third earthquake, registering a magnitude of 3.6, occurred just 15 minutes later, followed by a fourth quake, measuring 3.1 in magnitude, which struck 13 minutes after the initial temblor.
This sequence of events unfolded precisely at 3:19 PM IST, with the first earthquake hitting at 2:25 PM. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) provided the precise data, noting another seismic event—a 5.2 magnitude earthquake in Arunachal Pradesh at 3:27 PM IST, followed by a 3.3 magnitude disturbance in Uttarakhand just minutes later.

The NCS conveyed the earthquake’s specifics on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “Earthquake of Magnitude: 6.2, Occurred on 03-10-2023, 14:51:04 IST, Lat: 29.39 & Long: 81.23, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Nepal.”
The seismic upheaval originating in Nepal reverberated throughout the National Capital Region (NCR), which encompasses Delhi. Consequently, residents in Delhi-NCR reported experiencing vigorous tremors, necessitating swift evacuations from office buildings and other structures. The intensity of the shaking was most pronounced during the second major earthquake.
Reports also confirmed that tremors rippled across various regions extending beyond Delhi-NCR. In Uttar Pradesh, cities such as Lucknow, Hapur, and Amroha reported feeling the seismic activity. Furthermore, parts of Uttarakhand also sensed the impact of these successive earthquakes originating in Nepal.

As soon as the tremors commenced in the national capital, social media platforms were inundated with videos capturing people hastily evacuating buildings. These visual accounts underscored the prompt response to the seismic upheaval, exemplifying the community’s vigilance in the face of such natural events.

Most of the area of Uttarakhand is in zone four and five.
According to seismologists of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Uttarakhand is very sensitive to earthquakes. Most of the areas of Uttarakhand are in zone four and five in terms of earthquake. That is why earthquake incidents are being seen again and again.
