Bangladesh’s opener Soumya Sarkar, etched his name in the cricketing annals by breaking a 14-year-old record set by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar during the second ODI against New Zealand in Nelson on Wednesday.
Sarkar’s stellar performance saw him amass a remarkable 169 runs from 151 balls, boasting a striking rate of 111.92. The left-handed batter exhibited his prowess with 22 boundaries and 2 sixes, dismantling the Kiwi bowling attack in an impressive first inning display.

The 30-year-old’s exceptional knock not only propelled Bangladesh to a competitive total but also surpassed Tendulkar’s milestone for the highest runs in ODIs by a player from the subcontinent in New Zealand. Tendulkar had set the record in 2009 with an unbeaten 163-run innings against the Kiwis in Christchurch.
Sarkar’s innings also marked the highest run scored by a Bangladeshi cricketer on an away ground in the ODI format.
In a match where no other player managed to breach the 50-run mark, Soumya Sarkar’s outstanding contribution, along with Mushfiqur Rahim’s pivotal 45-run innings, allowed the ‘Bengal Tigers’ to post a total of 291 on the scoreboard.
Facing the Kiwi bowlers, Jacob Duffy and William O’Rourke spearheaded the attack, both securing three-wicket hauls in their respective spells. Additionally, Adam Milne, Josh Clarkson, and Adithya Ashok each claimed a wicket.
