The French Ministry of Culture, which confirmed her death, called her a "timeless Francophone icon."

Birkin was married to James Bond film score composer John Barry from 1965 to 1968

with whom she had a daughter, Kate Barry. Kate, a photographer, died in 2013 at age 46

Birkin suffered a mild stroke in 2021
