The expert committee entrusted with the task of formulating the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand has received its third extension, pushing the committee’s tenure further. Originally slated to conclude on September 27, the committee’s term has now been prolonged by an additional four months.

The extension proposal was officially confirmed by Special Secretary (Home), Ridhim Aggarwal, who acknowledged the committee’s formal request for the extension. Despite the diligent efforts put forth by the expert committee in drafting the UCC, the final version has not yet been officially submitted to the state government.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the expert committee, presided over by retired judge Ranjana Desai, was established on May 27, 2022. Initially, the committee was tasked with the responsibility of crafting the UCC draft and submitting its comprehensive report within a stipulated six-month timeframe. However, unforeseen challenges and complexities hampered the completion of the draft within the designated period. Consequently, the government granted a six-month extension to the committee. As the committee’s term was originally set to conclude on May 27, 2023, it has now been afforded an additional extension of four months.
The Chief Minister underscored that the committee has made significant progress in the drafting process. However, the formal report has yet to be presented to the government. Given the impending conclusion of the committee’s tenure on September 27, this latest extension marks the second such extension granted to the committee.
