MS Swaminathan, Father Of India's Green Revolution, Dies At 98

1. M.S. Swaminathan (1925-2020) was an Indian agricultural scientist and geneticist who is credited with initiating the Green Revolution in India.

He was born in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India, on August 7, 1925.

He received his B.Sc. degree in Zoology from the University of Madras in 1949 and his M.Sc. degree in Agriculture from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in 1951

In 1953, he went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison on a UNESCO fellowship to pursue a Ph.D. in Genetics.

After completing his Ph.D., he returned to India and joined the IARI as a geneticist.

In 1961, he was appointed as the Director of the Wheat Research Station in Pusa, Bihar.

At Pusa, he developed high-yielding varieties of wheat that were resistant to diseases and pests

In 1972, he was appointed as the Director-General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
