Despite his weekday departure, Steve Wright has been faithfully hosting the cherished “Sunday Love Songs” over the past year. Expressing his enthusiasm, he referred to “Pick of the Pops” as a “legendary” show that runs through historical music charts.
Paul Gambaccini’s upcoming show promises to unearth hidden treasures from the past eight decades, including his personal favorites from the 1950s onwards. Gambaccini fondly dubs these tracks “neglected gems.”
Reflecting on this transition, Wright, who left his afternoon slot in September the previous year, conveyed his eagerness to tackle the challenge of hosting “Pick of the Pops.” He praised Gambaccini’s previous work on the show, acknowledging his own opportunity to leave a unique mark on the iconic program.
Gambaccini, meanwhile, views this move as the start of a new chapter in his illustrious 25-year career with Radio 2. He eagerly anticipates presenting forgotten musical treasures from the last century in a live format, aiming to engage dedicated long-term listeners.

Furthermore, Radio 2 has an array of captivating specials lined up, including commemorations of 100 years of Hollywood, a Prom featuring Stevie Wonder’s “Innervisions,” and a showcase of Danny Elfman’s music from Tim Burton’s films. Fans of the station can also look forward to “Doctor Who @ 60: A Musical Celebration” in the fall, followed by Trevor Nelson’s “Soul Christmas” to ring in the festive season.
