A Remarkable Rainfall Deficit in August Uttarakhand witnessed an unusual meteorological phenomenon in August, with the region receiving the lowest rainfall in a decade. The state’s rainfall for the month lagged by eight percent below the long-term average. Meteorologists attribute this deficit to the absence of a robust system in the Bay of Bengal, resulting in decreased precipitation.
This year, the monsoon arrived in Uttarakhand five days later than usual. While some districts experienced substantial rainfall, others received less than their typical share. Meteorological experts note that this year has seen higher rainfall but reduced snowfall in the hilly regions of the state. The total rainfall for August reached 353.9 mm, an eight percent departure from the norm.
Bikram Singh, the Director of the Meteorological Center, suggests that the active El Nino phenomenon may also be contributing to the diminished rainfall in August. Historically, when El Nino is active, it tends to weaken the Indian monsoon.
